CHOOSING VANITIES & CABINETS for YOUR BATHROOM REMODEL

Are they the Same?

June 2024

Bathroom remodeling terminology can be confusing when considering what type of cabinets or what kind of vanity to choose when designing your bathroom renovation.

Is there a difference?  Do they mean the same thing?  Which is better?

Remodelers commonly refer to a vanity as cabinetry that has a sink installed in it, hides the plumbing and provides storage.  Cabinets are defined as storage units that do not include a sink and provide extra storage space.  So technically, bathroom vanities differ slightly from cabinets – they work to accommodate sinks and plumbing.

When choosing the look and feel for your vanity, here are a few things to consider:

What is the size of your bathroom?  Smaller bathrooms can look larger with floating or wall mounted vanities.  The visual appeal of space surrounding the vanity (which covers the plumbing) gives a small bathroom a larger, more contemporary look.  And it provides more flexibility to position the height of the vanity in the bathroom. Free standing vanities (that stand on the floor) also work in a small area. If a more traditional look and storage space is the main goal, a standing vanity with drawers and shelves will typically provide more storage space options.  Both floating and standing vanities can be custom made.

How many sinks?  Again, size and preference will dictate whether a single or double vanity is doable.  Single bowls provide more counter top space, which can turn into a clutter center.  Double bowls will limit countertop space (meaning less clutter) and allow more than one person to “do their thing” at the same time, but will double the cost for bowls and faucets and plumbing.

Is a certain wood better for a bathroom vanity and cabinetry?  Oak, maple and cherry are excellent choices for durable bathroom vanities.

What color or finish? Lighting and hardware factor into color selections when deciding on stained wood or painted vanities.  Cool light bulbs cast a blue tint while warm bulbs cast yellow tone.  Keeping that in mind with the atmosphere you want to create, cool colors and neutral palettes age well and create a relaxing, spa-like haven.  Cool shades of blue, blue-green and gray and neutrals of white, off white, and cream, all with a matte finish, are timeless, easy to care for and make accessorizing loads of fun!
